It's Devastating When You Discover That Someone You Care About Has Cancer

Your whole world is turned upside down. Your feelings run riot. You want to do your best to support them, but who is going to support you? It's hard to find information, and to communicate with your loved one. You are living under stress - it can affect your ability to do your job, and your relationships with other friends and family members. This isn't something you can prepare for. And here you are, thrown in at the deep end and expected to cope. After all, it's not you that has cancer, is it?

Welcome to the cancer fall-out zone. You are not alone. 1.2 million people in the UK are living with cancer. Almost all of them have partners, parents, children, brothers or sisters, friends or colleagues who care about them. If you are one of these people, you won't find yourself in any statistics. But your plight is beginning to be recognised. The Bristol Cancer Centre discovered that when they questioned their patients about the biggest traumas in their life before cancer, for many of them it was caring for someone else who had cancer.

The good news is that you don't have to struggle on alone. There is some help available out there. One way that you can take control of your situation is to hire a life coach to support you. Life coaching can bring you these benefits as you go through the experience of someone else's cancer:

  • Someone will really listen to you, so you can safely express your emotions without 'dumping' on family & friends. Expressing your emotions instead of bottling them up will reduce the constant feeling of stress and allow you to get on with life better.
  • You are less likely to 'blow up' with your family, so your relationships will survive this stressful situation better.
  • You can separate your own emotions from the feelings of the cancer patient. That way you are less affected by their highs and lows - and can offer more support to them.
  • You can explore the practical issues with a person who is behind you. They can help you see the wood for the trees, and make decisions that will benefit you and those around you - with a clear head.
  • You can be coached over the phone, so there is the safety of fully expressing yourself without worrying about appearances.
  • Your coach will help you address your whole life, to keep you in balance and give you some sense of control as you weather the ups and downs.
  • Your coach will keep the focus on you, so that you keep your sense of self - you come out of the experience with your identity intact so you can get on with the rest of your life.
